AI Mode vs AI Overview: What's the Difference?

AI Overviews and AI Mode are two Google AI surfaces citing different pages. See the real numbers on how they differ and what each means for your business.

Google now runs two AI surfaces, and buyers meet your business on both. AI Overview is the written summary above the classic results. AI Mode is a conversational search experience that replaces the list of links entirely. The two look similar enough that most businesses plan and measure them as one thing, which is understandable and turns out to be wrong: the numbers below show almost no overlap in the pages they cite, so presence on one surface tells you very little about presence on the other.

AI Overview is a generated summary sitting above Google's classic results, answering the searched question in a few paragraphs with cited pages. AI Mode is a separate conversational surface where the buyer asks follow-ups and gets long, detailed responses. One industry study found the two cited the same URLs only 14% of the time while agreeing semantically 90% of the time. AI Mode answers run four times longer and name three times more entities. A local business needs to earn citations on both, and track both separately.

What AI Overview is

AI Overview is a written summary Google generates for a search and places above the list of links. It resolves the searched question in a few short paragraphs, names a business or two where relevant, and links the pages it drew from.

The buyer never chooses to see it. It appears automatically when Google's systems judge a summary helpful, which covers a growing share of local service questions. The buyer reads the answer, notes the names, and often acts without scrolling to the classic results at all.

One number from the research is worth sitting with: 59% of AI Overviews name no brands or businesses at all. Most summaries answer the question generically, so the minority of answers naming businesses carry most of the commercial weight, and those are the ones worth earning a place in.

What AI Mode is

AI Mode is a separate search surface inside Google, built around conversation. The buyer enters it deliberately, asks a question, receives a long written response, and asks follow-ups refining the search. The classic list of links never leads the experience.

The responses differ from AI Overviews in scale. The same industry research found AI Mode answers run about four times longer and contain about three times more named entities: more businesses, more products, more places per response. A buyer comparing options in AI Mode sees a fuller shortlist, which means more slots to win and more competitors named beside you.

AI Mode also tends to work like a referral conversation. Follow-up questions narrow the field before any website loads, so a business present from the first answer onward usually stays in the running as the session goes, while a business absent from that first answer rarely gets introduced later.

The two surfaces cite different pages

The clearest evidence comes from an Ahrefs study comparing responses across both surfaces:

Measure What the study found
Cited URL overlap 14% of the time
Unique word overlap 16%
Semantic similarity 90%
AI Mode response length 4x longer
Entities in AI Mode responses 3x more
AI Overviews naming no brands 59%

Read the first and third rows together. The two surfaces agree on the substance nine times out of ten, yet cite the same pages barely one time in seven. They reach similar conclusions from almost entirely different evidence.

For your business this means a citation earned in AI Overview does not carry into AI Mode. Much of the underlying work overlaps, and the results still land separately, which is why each surface needs its own measurement row, its own gap list, and sometimes its own sourcing fixes.

Why the sources differ

AI Overview resolves one question quickly, and it tends to favor pages with a clean, direct passage answering the exact query, the same extraction logic that has long driven featured snippets. The pages winning citations there are quotable where it counts and structured so a machine finds the answer without hunting.

AI Mode builds a longer, research-style response covering the question and its natural follow-ups. It pulls from a wider source set: comparison pages, detailed guides, review platforms, discussion threads, and directories. Pages with depth and third-party corroboration win citations here even when their prose is less snippet-ready.

This is why the optimization work has two layers. Direct answer blocks and question-style headings serve AI Overview, while comprehensive coverage, comparison content, and presence on review and directory sources serve AI Mode. A site strong on only one layer tends to show up on only one surface. The what is AEO guide covers the answer-first layer, and how AI engines decide which local businesses to recommend covers the sourcing layer.

What this means for your business

Three practical consequences follow from the data.

Track both surfaces separately. Your question list needs a row per question per surface, because the answer on one tells you nothing about the other. The AI overview tracking and AI Mode tracking guides set up each record.

Expect AI Mode to name more of your competitors. Longer responses with three times the entities mean the buyer sees a fuller comparison, so being named is only the start; the description around the name, with correct services, area, and prices, is what turns the mention into a call.

Treat one win as a partial picture. A citation in an AI Overview is real progress, and a buyer who switches over to AI Mode and finds three competitors named without you is working from a different shortlist than the one you thought you were on. Checking both surfaces by hand across a full question list takes an afternoon each month. If you want the baseline built for you, run a free audit and start from the result.
