AI Mode tracking measures whether your business appears in conversational search answers. What to record, how AI Mode differs from AI Overviews, and how to run the checks on a schedule.

Search has a new front door. Instead of typing two keywords and scanning ten links, buyers now ask a full question and read an answer written for them on the spot. AI Mode is the surface where this happens inside search itself. AI Mode tracking tells you whether your business appears there.
AI Mode tracking measures whether your business appears in the conversational answers search generates when a buyer asks a full question. A tracker records which questions return an answer naming businesses, whether your site is cited, how your business is described, and which competitors appear in your place. Businesses track AI Mode because the answer arrives before the list of links, and a business missing from the answer loses the visit.
AI Mode is the conversational search surface. A buyer asks a full question and receives a written answer with a small set of cited sources instead of ten ranked results. AI Mode tracking is the routine of checking whether your business shows up inside those answers, and watching the result move over time.
The work has three parts. Define the questions a real buyer asks before choosing a business like yours. Run each question and record what comes back. Repeat often enough to see direction rather than a snapshot. Position numbers do not apply here. Presence and description do.
Both are AI-written answers, and most businesses treat them as one thing. They behave differently, and tracking them as one hides half the picture.
| Question | AI Overviews | AI Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Above the standard results on a normal search page | A separate conversational surface the buyer enters deliberately |
| The input | A short keyword query | A full question, usually followed by more questions |
| The output | A summary block, with the ranked links still below | A written answer built for the thread, with a few citations |
| What happens next | The buyer scrolls to the links | The buyer asks a follow-up |
An AI Overview sits on top of a results page you already understand. AI Mode replaces the page. For tracking, the follow-up turn matters most. A buyer who asks for the best med spa nearby and then narrows to a specific treatment has cut the field twice before any website loads. Your business needs to survive both turns. For the Overview side of this work, see AI overview tracking.
Record five things per question.
Then add the second turn. Note whether you survive a narrower follow-up question. Plenty of businesses appear for the broad question and vanish for the specific one, and the specific one sits closer to the sale.
Three shifts make the old measurements insufficient.
The last shift is the reason tracking exists as a separate discipline. When the platform declines to report a surface, your own record becomes the only measurement.
Start with questions, not keywords. Write 20 to 40 questions a buyer would ask before choosing a business like yours, in the words a person uses out loud. Include the broad ones and the narrow ones.
Run each question and log the result. Capture whether businesses were named, whether you were among them, the description used, and the citations. Screenshots age better than notes, since the wording matters as much as the presence.
Add a follow-up for every broad question. Ask the narrowing question a real buyer asks next, and log the second answer too.
Widen past one surface. Buyers ask the same questions of the standalone AI engines your customers use, and each builds answers from its own reading of the web. A record covering one surface overstates your position.
Re-run on a schedule and compare. Monthly works for most businesses. The comparison is the point, since a drop caught in a month is fixable and a drop found a year later has already cost the year.
Tracking measures. It does not fix. When the log shows you missing from the answers, the repair is the same foundational work behind any AI citation: one consistent description of your business everywhere, structured data a machine reads without guessing, listings agreeing on your name, address, and hours, and pages answering real questions in plain language.
A structured AI visibility audit runs this measurement across a calibrated question set, records how each answer describes you, and ranks the gaps by what would change the answer fastest. To see what the answers say about your business today, preview an AI visibility snapshot and read the descriptions in your own words rather than guessing at them.
